The Project

Ixxus wanted to develop a framework that can be easily used to rapidly create dynamic websites that do not compromise on accessibility or web best practices, while providing flexibility to editors to produce rich content that fit within the client’s brand. A decoupled architecture was developed so that content can be aggregated from different sources (such as CMS, web services etc.), to remove reliance on specific technologies and to allow other technologies, such as SOLR and MarkLogic, to integrate with the content. Alfresco was chosen to provide the CMS aspect of the project due to the robust workflow and deployment features.

The Project objectives:

  • Make use of Alfresco to provide web based editorial XML content creation, approval workflow, versioning, per-user 'sandboxed' preview, and content deployment
  • Using Alfresco FSR to deploy and post-process content
  • XSLT view to render Alfresco deployed XML to provide good separation of content and allow extraction of tinyMCE rich content to fit with required branding and produce lightweight, semantic, accessible XHTML
  • Ability to produce flexible, dynamic pages
  • High performance - caching of dynamic data and page renditions
  • Provide a framework onto which ‘web 2.0’ functionality can be added in a maintainable and testable way
  • Provide a mechanism to index XML content from Alfresco into SOLR
  • Allow unit testing as part of a continuous deployment strategy
  • PHP used to help with rapid development and reduce development and maintenance costs
  • Provide the ability to integrate with other technologies such as SOLR for searching or MarkLogic for dynamic content retrieval and manipulation
  • Authentication mechanism to provide secure areas of the website and facilitate online registration
  • Emphasis on accessibility and clean branding
  • Increase efficiency in publishing information

Project Delivery – Alfresco WCM

Ixxus developed an Alfresco based WCM system to enable the information to be published and managed easily on the Ixxus website or any website built using the Ixxus web framework.
