Alfresco Adds Web Muscle to Open Source Content Management Suite

New features include Web 2.0 site framework, sample sites and a new deployment module

BOSTON—April 19th, 2007—Alfresco Software, Inc., the first and leading provider of an open source enterprise content management solution, today announced the availability of the newest version of its Web Content Management (WCM) system, adding features to help companies manage technology and business requirements introduced by the widespread adoption of Web 2.0 applications.

The new features include new deployment modules, CIFS access to support any content authoring or web development tool such as DreamWeaver, PhotoShop, Eclipse, NetBeans, HTML, JSP, CSS or XSL and sample sites, including a version of Alfresco’s own site, which served as the test bed for the new version of Alfresco Web Content Management. Nearly 1,500 customers and partners tested Alfresco’s preview release WCM capabilities prior to release in a real-life production setting. Among the testers was Alfresco itself, which used the preview to enable its own web site, alfresco.com, to go live on day one of the production release.

“The power of open source is that it allows companies to pair best-of-breed components with best-of-breed ideas to drive innovation,” said John Newton, CTO, Alfresco. “Our business is dependent on our website and our website is dependent on our own WCM software. This is not common with many ECM vendors. We, on the other hand, eat our own dog food. Now there is a true open source alternative for enterprise class WCM. Leading customers in the computer games, retail, and educational markets, with some of the most exciting and exacting WCM requirements, have already selected Alfresco.”

Alfresco has built one of the strongest open source brands in the industry, establishing a role as the open source alternative to proprietary enterprise content management software. Alfresco Web Content Management extends the company’s enterprise strengths and tackles challenges its customers face re-designing web sites brought about by the shift to lightweight, Web 2.0 applications.

“Web 2.0 and consumer expectations have driven great demand for companies to re-launch their corporate websites to deliver an enhanced user experience,” said Malcolm Teasdale, Director of Content Management Solutions, Eye Street Software. “Eye Street developed alfresco.com using Alfresco’s innovative content entry forms, presentation templates and version control to allow business users at Alfresco to simply update their own content. Alfresco, coupled with the Eye Street content deployment solution, provides an open source alternative to traditional WCM vendors.”

Features in the newest release of Alfresco Web Content Management include:

  • A heterogeneous runtime environment. One Alfresco server can manage multiple sites built on HTML, JSP, PHP, Ruby on Rails or Microsoft’s .NET framework
  • Support for portal based sites including Liferay and JBoss
  • Integrated content deployment with support for secure transactional replication of Alfresco websites to one or multiple runtime servers to support traffic intensive intranet/extranet or internet web sites
  • Integrated runtime content repository with full audit trail and rollback which is critical for any regulated industry such as financial services, pharmaceuticals or healthcare
  • Integrated Web 2.0 style services, with user profile management, personalization, user generate content, RSS and OpenSearch
  • Alfresco website sample site framework to rapidly build a dynamic web 2.0 style website with Alfresco
