The Formtek Engineering Data Management (EDM) Module is a pre-packaged solution for the Alfresco Open Content Platform. It provides an installation-ready, minimal services solution for a secure, enterprise engineering document and drawing management and collaboration foundation that allows a business to effectively manage all engineering documentation across its distributed enterprise.

The Formtek EDM Module defines a data content model specific to the needs of engineers for the management of drawings and documents. Within Alfresco Share, the Formtek EDM Module provides View, Edit and Advanced Search forms that enable engineering metadata to be displayed, edited and efficiently searched.

The Formtek EDM Module supports popular CAD file formats, like the DWG, DXF and DWF formats from AutoCAD. Thumbnails and Flash (SWF) previews for these CAD formats are automatically generated for display and use within the Share Document Library. In addition, PDF renditions of AutoCAD files can be generated on-demand and stored in the repository.

The Formtek EDM Module is an extension to the Alfresco data repository and Alfresco Share application. The EDM solution consists of two AMP (Alfresco Module Package) files:

The first AMP file is applied to the Alfresco repository and adds two engineering-specific document types to the standard Alfresco Content Model: Engineering Drawing and Engineering Document. These document types define metadata fields that can be used to associate data with engineering drawings and documents that are stored within Alfresco. This AMP file also extends the capability of the Alfresco repository to transform CAD file content into thumbnail and Flash preview formats.

The second AMP file is applied to Alfresco Share and installs forms in Share that are used for managing the engineering document type metadata. View forms on the Share document details page display in an easy-to-read format all metadata associated with the drawing or document. Edit forms allow engineering metadata to be updated. Search forms allow engineering metadata and the associated drawings and documents to be queried.
