What is Alfresco?

Alfresco is the leading open source alternative for enterprise content management. It couples the innovation of open source with the stability of a true enterprise-class platform. The open source model allows Alfresco to use best-of-breed open source technologies and contributions from the open source community to get higher quality software produced more quickly at much lower cost. Our goal is to not only provide an open source offering but to surpass commercial offerings such as Documentum® or Microsoft® SharePoint™ in terms of features, functionality and benefits to the user community.

Can I take a look at what it does?

Sure. You can discover Alfresco via Screenshots, On Demand Webinars, Events, and the Community Wiki. If you prefer, you can also download it.

How do I download it?

Why not start by reading our installation FAQ, and then moving on to our downloads page. The simplest option is to use the complete installer (the .exe for Windows or .bin for Linux) which includes all the components that you need. Generally the installation takes less than ten minutes, our record is 2 minutes. Let us know if you can beat it!

How do I get started?

Once Alfresco is installed, you can connect to it by going to http://localhost:<Port Number>/alfresco, where <Port Number> is the port you have defined (by default the port number will be 8080). We'd recommend completing the tutorial on the downloads page. This will let you try out some of the Alfresco functionality and build some confidence. Allow an hour to give you a little time to play with it on your own. Why not also request our documentation? You can request it here.

How do I get connected?

Once you have Alfresco running, you have the chance to work with other Alfresco Guru's worldwide. Sign up for the forums, take a look at the Wiki, and the Alfresco Blogs, and if you would like to contribute, why not connect to the Forge and collaborate on add-on projects or contribute language packs, templates or transformations.
