Community Innovation

MoroccoIn today’s increasingly mobile workforce, it’s more difficult than ever to build bonds and a sense of shared culture across geographies and across teams.

Cultivating an environment of real-time collaboration, teamwork and empowered employees is something that has risen in importance as a result of the modern company and its culture as we, ourselves become more distributed.

At Alfresco, we’re especially aware of how hard it can be to bring people together with our headquarters in the UK and with teams around the globe.

So, how do companies today go about building a shared purpose amongst their employees and get out in front of becoming just a company of email signatures and voices on the other line?

We’ve decided to make a bold move and throw away the notion of a typical “company retreat”. Instead, we’re bringing together people from all areas of the Alfresco family and taking them to Morocco to hike Mount Toubkal, the highest mountain in North Africa.

These 20 volunteers, organized into 3 teams (Blue, Orange and Green) will spend 5 days working together to achieve the 3 objectives:  bagging a summit; getting to know each other under some pretty challenging conditions; raising money for their charity.

Each team has selected a charity with a goal of raising money and awareness. Here’s a look at the charities we’ll be raising money for:

Blue Team Charity

Save the Children is the leading independent organization creating lasting change in the lives of children in need in the United States and around the world.

When disaster strikes around the world, Save the Children is there to save lives with food, medical care and education and remains to help communities rebuild through long-term recovery programs. As quickly and as effectively as Save the Children responds to tsunamis and civil conflict, it works to resolve the ongoing struggles children face every day — poverty, hunger, illiteracy and disease — and replaces them with hope for the future.

Orange Team Charity

Caudwell Children is dedicated to helping change special children’s lives with donations of specialist equipment, treatment and therapy.

The Charity was founded by entrepreneur, John Caudwell, whose vision was to create a sustainable children’s charity that offered benefactors’ transparency and piece of mind that 100% of their donation was being used to directly change children’s lives.

Every penny given to Caudwell Children is used to provide these life changing donations to children. So you can be sure that every penny you donate is really making a difference.

Asthma UK is dedicated to improving the health and well-being of the 5.4 million people in the UK whose lives are affected by asthma. Their vision is ‘control over asthma today, freedom from asthma tomorrow.’

Asthma UK works together with people with asthma, health professionals and researchers to develop and share expertise to help people increase their understanding and reduce the effect of asthma on their lives.

Ultimately, we believe that teamwork is born through shared challenges and shared higher purpose. So, by putting ourselves up against a real, physical challenge, we hope to not only give back to a charity in need, but to build teamwork, better communication and bonds grow a sense of throughout our company culture  – something that is more important than ever in today’s evolving workplace.

We’re curious to hear how your company is making culture and teamwork a priority. How do you build better communication and human bonds with remote teams? And what innovative techniques are you seeing people use to manage the challenges ofremote working in today’s changing work environment?
