Today, we hosted a webinar on the benefits of integrating process and content to achieve digital transformation. Led by two industry trailblazers, John Newton, Founder and CTO of Alfresco and Sandy Kemsley, tech analyst and Founder of Column 2, we discussed the topic at length and enjoyed some nice commentary from an audience of technology decision makers, architects and developers. The Importance of Integration

In the first segment of the webinar, John and Sandy talked about the digital content and process landscape at large and reviewed the opportunities–both strategic and financial–that companies can see as a result of integrating the two disciplines. Sandy noted that she’s “amazed by how many ad hoc content and process silos still exist in organizations.” But what it comes down to as John noted, is the organizational structure that’s been set up – and that’s why we’re still seeing the separation. “However, digital transformation is changing that,” he says.

New Insights from Integration

The beauty of truly integrating process and content are the short and long term benefits realized by companies such as financial and insurance institutions but others, as well. “By integrating process and content, we improve the insights into our own business,” John says, and that’s invaluable. New challenges but also opportunities may surface that haven’t yet been thought of and in many cases they can serve as catalysts for strengthening and revitalizing your business and the relationships with your customers – think of scenarios such as customer or employee on-boarding.

Integration Design Patterns

When you’re ready to integrate your process and content, there’s a plethora of factors to consider but as John put it, “design for the user first.” The idea of design thinking is critical here, as you can glean important insights and information from your users rather than just from the people designing and architecting. John’s sentiment about the design user really hit home when he said “the design user often knows more than the design analyst,” so please pay attention to this audience. What’s does the Future of Integration Look Like?

An interesting and no doubt the most forward-thinking segment of our webinar was around the future. We discussed the importance of cloud-native infrastructure when implementing process and content integration – and the benefits of the cloud in terms of scalability, agility and elasticity. John noted that in the past, companies were reticent to turn to the cloud, but that’s fast-becoming a more secure environment, giving companies way more options (learn more about the benefits of embracing a cloud architecture here).

And what would a future facing conversation be without the mention of Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Blockchain? We talked about that as well, and while all three will certainly make an impact in the process/content space, John believes that AI is the most important to consider at this time.
