Alfresco Joins the ODF Alliance

Alfresco 1.4 Offers ODF Virtual File System and ODF Records Management Support

LONDON—November 06, 2006—Alfresco Software, Inc., the first and leading provider of an open source enterprise content management (ECM) solution, today announced that it has become a member of the ODF Alliance.

The Alfresco 1.4 ECM Suite includes Records Management and Document Management. The Document Management component includes an OpenDocument Format (ODF) Virtual File System. This offers a simple shared drive interface to any office application. Microsoft Office and Open Office users alike can save or drag content into intelligent drop-zones, where rules and actions transparently convert incoming content into the ODF vendor-neutral format. This is particularly important for long-term archival and the Alfresco Records Manager offers full support for ODF.

"Alfresco 1.4 is an excellent example of how an open standard like ODF can spur innovative solutions for content management," said Marino Marcich, managing director of the ODF Alliance.

ODF is an open XML file format that was approved by the International Organization for Standardization and the International Electrotechnical Commission (ISO/IEC 26300) as a standard in May 2006. The mission of the ODF Alliance is to enable the public sector to have greater control over and direct management of their own records, information and documents. The ODF Alliance seeks to promote and advance the use of ODF as the primary document format for governments.

"There is a growing concern from governments and organizations that they may not be able to access, retrieve and use critical records, information and documents in the future," said John Newton, chief technology officer, Alfresco Software, Inc. "Sharepoint's purpose, as an Office platform, is to build upon and expand the Office monopoly and to push users to the latest versions of Office. We see ODF as key to giving users choice."
