Alfresco Wins InfoWorld’s “Bossie” Award for Second Consecutive Year
Alfresco Labs recognized as one of the top open source enterprise applicationsLONDON, August 11, 2008 – Alfresco Software, Inc. today announced that it has won an InfoWorld Best of Open Source Software Award, or “Bossie”. Each year, IDG’s InfoWorld honors the most innovative open source projects from software companies around the globe. For the second consecutive year, Alfresco Labs, formerly called Alfresco Community, has been recognized under the best of open source enterprise applications category.
Alfresco Labs has been chosen as the best open source content management solution for its ease of use and functionality “often surpassing commercial offerings’ features.” Alfresco Labs was also chosen for its distributed architecture and scalability.
“Open source is a big disruptor in the enterprise content management marketplace which has been traditionally dominated by proprietary technology,” said Dr. Ian Howells, CMO of Alfresco Software. “The open source business model has allowed Alfresco to quickly grow a strong user community and deliver enterprise-class content management functionality that is as easy to use as a shared drive. With the massive growth of Microsoft® SharePoint®, customers are seeking an alternative that delivers equivalent benefits but with true open platform choice. This gives companies the freedom to select their hardware, database, operating system, application server and portal products and reduce IT costs.”
Alfresco has seen major adoption of its open source ECM system throughout the world. Alfresco Labs is designed to be the research “Community Lab” for new features, enabling developers to access a nightly build with the latest functionality. The latest version supports the Microsoft® Office SharePoint® protocol requiring no client installation. There have been over one million downloads of Alfresco Labs. The company also has more than 500 enterprise customers, including the NYSE, Los Angeles Times, Boise Cascade, Sony Pictures, Activision, Kaplan, FedEx and KLM.
"The breadth and quality of open source software continues to amaze us," notes Doug Dineley, Executive Editor of the InfoWorld Test Center. "We've singled out 60 products for Bossies -- developer tools, middleware, firewalls and routers, productivity apps, CRM and ERP, etc. -- and we're only scratching the surface. When you look at all that's available, and how good it is, you start to think that someday all software will be free.”
