Local Maidenhead Company Breaks Out the Gardening Tools to Regenerate Burnham Beeches
Employees from Alfresco Software help to encourage greater biodiversity in area of special scientific interest.
Maidenhead, U.K. – October 8th, 2015 – The employees from Maidenhead-based Alfresco Software are giving back to the local community today by helping to regenerate the natural heathland of Burnham Beeches.
Alfresco makes software that helps organisations like Oxfam, UK Power Networks and the NHS manage their digital content. A team of 50 people from the software company will don wellies and gardening gloves to help remove naturally seeded beech trees from the site in an effort to promote biodiversity.
Famous for its ancient pollarded beech trees, Burnham Beeches has been owned and managed by the City of London since 1880. The 500 acres of woodland and common land is protected by an Act of Parliament as a public open space and is a unique example of ancient managed woodland. As an ancient forest, Burnham Beeches is home to a number of rare or threatened species, making it a site of special scientific interest, a national nature reserve and a special area of conservation.
Working with the Slough Business Community Partnership, a group that supports businesses looking to be involved in community projects in Slough and the surrounding area, the fifty-strong team from Alfresco will focus on thinning areas with young beech trees to encourage greater plant biodiversity and preserving and restoring the natural heather and gorse, a crucial habitat for the local wildlife.
“Alfresco was founded in Maidenhead ten years ago. Throughout the years it has always been important for us to find ways to give back to the community, which has supported Alfresco throughout its growth to become a truly world class company, said Patti Rain-Wiffin, Director of Global Human Resources. “This regeneration project will ensure that the local community can continue to enjoy Burnham Beeches and its unique wildlife both now and in the future.”
