Study Finds Running Alfresco Content Services on Amazon Web Services Delivers 148% ROI and Payback Benefits in Less Than 6 Months

SAN MATEO, Calif.—Oct. 26, 2017 — Alfresco Software, one of the leading open source providers of enterprise content management and process automation, together with Amazon Web Services (AWS), today announced the release of a new commissioned Total Economic Impact (TEI) study conducted by Forrester Consulting. The study shows the cost savings, business benefits and potential return on investment (ROI) enterprises may realize by deploying Alfresco Content Services on AWS.

Forrester interviewed seven joint customers and subsequent financial analysis found that these organizations experienced present value (PV) benefits of $6.8 million over three years versus costs of $2.7 million, adding up to a net present value (NPV) of almost $4.1 million and an ROI of 148%.  The breakeven payback period for implementing Alfresco Content Services on AWS was found to be less than six months.

Prior to using Alfresco Content Services, the customers used a variety of traditional enterprise content management (ECM) systems. These were typically managed on premises at the department level and each company used multiple systems – sometimes dozens.

Additional cost savings benefits highlighted in the Forrester TEI study include:

  • Reduced cost of technical support team of $2.6 million. Alfresco Content Services on AWS was significantly easier to manage and maintain.
  • Avoided cost of global content distribution of $2.4 million. Moving assets around the globe required shipping costs, data transfers, and expensive agency fees, which were avoided after adopting Alfresco Content Services on AWS.
  • Avoided cost of redundant creative work of $466,285. The cost of being unable to locate existing assets prior to using Alfresco resulted in expensive rework.

Beyond the quantifiable benefits, the survey also found that customers were quick to point out that this modern approach readied them for the future.  As one vice president participating in the survey said: “You can’t just take an application that was built 10 years ago that runs in your data center and put it in a cloud environment and be able to take advantage of the benefits you need from cloud. To leverage the cloud, an application must be built the right way.”

Speed of deployment was called out as a particular advantage.  As another participant stated, “One of our biggest challenges is to create proper parallel sets of environments so that we can do integration testing, beta releases, and such. With Alfresco and AWS, we just push a button to create multiple environments.”

“Alfresco is the only modern digital business platform in the market that is optimized for AWS and together helps you achieve faster time to value,” said Doug Dennerline, president and CEO at Alfresco. “We think this study proves that organizations can achieve significant cost savings with Alfresco Content Services on AWS across various business activities and technical operations as well as take advantage of benefits such as speed, agility, elastic scale and security.”

“AWS offers an ideal platform for mission-critical Enterprise Content Management (ECM), such as Alfresco Content Services, where elastic server infrastructure and flexible storage service options are crucial in delivering ECM at-scale,” said David Wright, general manager of Global ISV & Technology Partners at AWS. “This report demonstrates how real-world customers have derived significant benefits, such as faster return-on-investment, as a result of the greater speed, agility, and security afforded by deploying their Alfresco ECM applications onto AWS.”
